GOST 896-2021 establishes a method for determining the gloss of paint and varnish coatings using a photoelectric gloss meter with a measurement angle of 45 °. This method is used to determine the gloss of paint coatings applied to flat glass plates or opaque surfaces without structural defects.

The method does not apply to the determination of the gloss of textured paint coatings (decorative hammer, "moire", "shagreen", "frost"), coatings with a metallic effect, translucent coatings, since the structure and surface properties of the paint coating have a significant impact on the determination of gloss and may lead to misrepresentation of the results.
